The Eco Group meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 2pm in different group members’ houses. It is a discussion group to find out about different environmental or climate change issues and see if there is anything we can do to educate the u3a members generally or the wider community within South Woodham Ferrers. Some of our topics during last year included visiting the allotments, a talk by the Town Council Environment Officer and a talk by Mark Smith from the Environmental Sustainability Team at Chelmsford City Council about recycling, specifically plastic recycling. This topic is confusing as different councils have different policies although apparently it is supposed to be standardised nationwide later this year – we shall see. There is very little plastic that can’t be recycled by Chelmsford but it is different if you live outside of that area. Please click on recycling plastics for more information about recycling of plastics in South Woodham Ferrers.
So far we have sent five boxes of empty medicine blister packs back to ReFactory for recycling, thanks to grants and a mystery donation. Since then we have started asking for member donations to continue the scheme and I recently purchased another box to fill so we can continue for as long as you can make a small contribution towards the scheme. I know it's not ideal and if you prefer not to then put them in the general waste or take them to Boots where there is no charge. Thanks for supporting the initiative.
Our meetings for 2026 are 23rd February, 27th April, 22nd June, 28th September, 26 October and 23rd November. Topics are still to be confirmed.
Please contact Ann Woolley to find out the meeting venue if you are interested in joining in.
