South Woodham Ferrers

Needle Felting

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: Monthly on Wednesday mornings 10:00 am-12:00 pm
4th Wednesday, Lorraine Hayward
Venue: South Woodham Ferrers Village Hall

The needle felting group will run on the 4th Wednesday of the month at the Village Hall between 10 and 12 noon.

My aim is to pass on my knowledge and as a group work our way through some of the projects in the photo. Starting with the toadstool as it incorporates 4 different felting techniques.

I will provide mats, needles, wool and advise you on the equipment you can buy and the different types of wool and it’s uses.

If you would like more information, please contact Lorraine Hayward .

The first session of the needle felting group

We created toadstools. This is a classic first needle felting project. It introduced us to several of the main needle felting techniques.

Third Session - Sheep (in time for Easter!)

A Colony of Penguins

Making this colony of penguins was a lot of fun. Due to the two hour time limit we started with a small ball of wool as the centre of each penguin. This week we learnt how to make flat sheets of felt to cut into size to make the wings and the feet. This is going to be useful for lots of projects.

A Skulk of Sleeping Foxes

These sleeping foxes are adorable. Lorraine provided 3 pre-made balls to create the head and the curled up body. We were all very proud of our creations.

A Parliament of Owls

Now that we have gained more experience we found that we could make these owls with less help than previous projects. Due to the two hour time constraint, the centre of each owl is a woolen tumble dryer ball.

Mixed Skills Session

For this session we split up to learn and/or consolidate a variety of skills. Some created 2D needle felt scenes, Others created the foxes that they missed in an earlier session. The starfish was created to learn a number of different skills including reverse needle felting.

Beehives

We enjoyed creating these beehives. We wrapped core wool around to create the beehive shape and then covered it in the desired main colour. We then created a line of needle felted holes in a spiral to create a ridge for a few strands of the darker colour to be needle felted into. The entrance to the beehive was a piece of black needle felted wool. Finally the bee was created. This was the fiddliest bit. The felt for the wings was twisted to create the double wing shape.

Homework for the Beehive session - make a large bee

The homework for the beehive session is to create a large bee (as seen in the photos here). The large bee is created in the same way as the small bees and should be roughly the same size as the beehive that was created.).

How to make a frog heart (e.g. for Valentines Day)

Lorraine has made these to show us how to make frog hearts. This is an option for the meeting in January. Please bring some heart shape cookie cutters if you already have some. Lorraine will be bringing 6.
